Microsoft presides over graduation of Kenyan trainees

Ugunja Community Resource Centre partners with Microsoft to officiate the graduation of youth, women, and persons with disability in Siaya District.

Ugunja, Kenya – 23rd March, 2009 – The Ugunja Community Resource Centre African Centre (UCRC) today hosted a graduation ceremony for 550 youth, women, and persons with disability following the successful completion of their training in ICT, Entrepreneurship and Life Skills.

Internet Use Falls Far Behind Mobile Phones

Despite being identified as a leading reformer in the ICT sector in the continent, consumers in Kenya are being charged relatively higher for ICT services compared to other countries.
According to a new World Bank report titled Africa’s Infrastructure: A Time for Transformation released last week, the country has recorded a relatively high Internet usage though the service is costly.

Going green: A paperless economy

Kenya is now set to achieving a paperless economy following signing into law the contentious Communication (Amendment) Act 2008 by President Kibaki on January 2.

This effectively gives the ICT sector impetus to start reaping fruits from the much-awaited undisputed sections of the new law. For long, Kenya has been a champion in many areas, but not in e-commerce due to lack of relevant legislation.

State to put up special zone for ICT firms

The government is set to create a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kitengela, Athi River to drive its implementation of Vision 2030.

Already, the government is seeking to purchase land of not less than 3,000 acres which will host an information communication technology (ICT) park, science park, industrial park and small and medium enterprises (SME) park.

Efforts to determine the amount to be spent were not successful as calls to Information PS, Dr Bitange Ndemo went unanswered.

East Africa Telecentre Academy taking shape as committee convene in Kampala to discuss curriculum development

Since last year’s successful EA telecentre forum held in Sudan, the
committee selected to spearhead the academy has been collaborating
online to gather ideas as well as set action points. One of the
resolutions was that the academy be hosted at Kyambogo University in
Uganda, through the lead organization Uganda Development Services. The
team is also very keen to learn from the Telecentre.org academy
curriculum grant and adopt what’s relevant.

The Kenya ICT Board Commences ICT Entrepreneurship Training Program

 Kenya ICT Board commenced the ICT Entrepreneurship Training Program today 1st December 2008. This is a major milestone that will see over 7500 ICT entrepreneurs trained over the next 3 years.

This training which comes at no cost to the trainee will ensure that graduates of the course are eligible to own and run the Board’s Pasha Centres.
